Many current solutions have placed focus on macroplastics, like the Ocean Cleanup initiative, but in reality, only 6% of total plastic litter that enters the ocean are macroplastics. Recent research has proven that microplastics already exist in our bloodstream, and it is clear the problem will only grow. Although there is no direct proof that microplastics harm humans, microplastics can absorb chemical pollutants like PBDEs, and bite back at humans by traveling up the food chain, often causing food poisoning.
As of now, there is no clear method to rid our seas of microplastics. We hope to build a bridge and accelerate future microplastic research by greatly increasing the convenience and accuracy of analysis.
